Artifacts
In this project I decided to go above the ground and explore the cultural layer that lays not in the depths of the earth, but right on the surface, under our feet.
I spent the half year traveling around Lithuania, collecting various objects and taking photographs on film. This trip was not a vacation for me, but a way of getting to know the country in which I live. My goal was to better study Lithuanian culture, way of life, communicate with people and discover places, I had never been to before. On this trip I collected a lot of valuable information about Lithuania. Also I gathered many amazing artifacts that I found in various places. These objects can tell us a lot of interesting things about the modern life of local people, about simple daily being and routines.
To work on my project, I chose a very complex and not common printmaking technique - liquid light. In my opinion, this technique is best suited for realizing my idea. This is a traditional silver photo process, but instead of paper I use objects to print the photos. These photographs were taken in the same places where the artifacts were found, this is how they linked.
Though Lithuania is not a big country at all, it is very diverse in its culture. In my project, I wanted to show exactly this versatile Lithuania, not the beautiful monuments and architecture and castles, of which there are a lot in Lithuania, but the atmosphere of the country, its character and amazing diversity.
